Butane Zippo Lighters
In 2007, Zippo introduced the Zippo Blue which was the first butane Zippo lighter in the market. Instead of the usual Zippo product, this new design of a Zippo lighters uses butane as its fuel. Butane is a type of gas that can quickly be converted to liquid and is a component of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

A remarkable effect of using butane was the appearance of a cold blue fire. Most Zippo lighters that use regular naphtha gas have yellowish to reddish flames. Butane Zippo lighters, on the other hand, have a very distinctive blue flame, the exact color where the new line of lighters got its name from.
Since many backpackers and outdoor groups started switching to butane-fuelled lighters, Zippo crafted their Blue line. It gave them the ability to compete with the other lighter brands while still retaining the standard Zippo qualities. They did not switch all products to butane though, as it can be hard to ignite during colder weather.
Butane lighters are kindled by striking the traditional flint wheel of Zippo against its valve-covered opening. The ensuing spark causes the ignition needed for the flame to come out. The flame can only be smothered out by closing the lid of the lighter.
Zippo decided to combine the advantages of butane along with their other worthy features such as wind proofing, strong steel body, and easy ignition through the use of a flint wheel. Zippo Blue is the only butane Zippo while the rest of the lighter products are still using naphtha.
