Vietnam was basically a war Americans were not ready for. The locals employed guerilla warfare; something the US forces were not familiar with then. The success of the Vietnam campaign is still debated upon up to this date, but what is certain is the courage and fortitude American soldiers had.
Most of the Vietnam-war inspired Zippos are simple, with commemorative inscriptions and quotations that are both inspiring and tragic. The reason for this is that Zippos were actually common utility equipment for American soldiers there. These inscriptions were words engraved by the soldiers themselves. This was so they can tell apart their own Zippos from the others. These are great collector items because these lighters were actually part of the war itself. But one special Vietnam War Zippo is a piece that bears the American crest and has the inscription “Viet Nam Saigon 68-69” engraved on the chrome.
The fact that these lighters were actually part of history makes them more appealing. When you get a Vietnam Zippo, you are pretty much assured that you don’t just have a commemorative but an actual and genuine piece of the war and history.
